coathangerThe wire coat hanger was inspired by a coat hook that was invented in 1869 by O. A. North of New Britain, Connecticut. An employee of the Timberlake Wire and Novelty Company, Albert J. Parkhouse of Jackson, Michigan has also been credited with the invention as has Christopher Cann in 1876 as an engineering student at Boston University.

Dr. Angus Wallace and Dr. Tom Wong used a coat hanger, brandy, and a tube to operate on a collapsed lung during an airplane flight from Hong Kong to London and succeeded.

The famous Blue Peter ‘Advent Crown’ was a Christmas mobile made out of four wire coat hangers. Other components included: Fireproof tinsel & ribbon, coloured glass balls, thin wire, plasticine, two tin lids and four candles.
